Prosthetic Components

Prosthetic components are the individual parts that make up a prosthetic device, such as an artificial limb. These components work together to allow for movement, stability, and functionality. Key components include the socket, suspension system, joints (knee, ankle, etc.), and the terminal device (foot or hand).

Major components of a prosthetic limb:

• Socket: This is the custom-made receptacle that fits onto the residual limb and transmits forces and weight-bearing loads from the prosthesis to the body.

• Suspension: This mechanism keeps the prosthesis securely attached to the residual limb, preventing it from slipping or falling off.

• Joints: These components, such as knees and ankles, allow for movement and articulation, mimicking natural limb movement.

• Pylon: The pylon is a connecting component, often a tube, that provides structure and support between the socket, joints, and terminal device.

• Terminal Device: This is the part of the prosthesis that interfaces with the environment, such as a prosthetic foot or a prosthetic hand or hook.

• Adapters: These components connect different parts of the prosthesis together.

• Cosmesis: A cosmetic cover that gives the prosthesis a more natural appearance.

Materials used in prosthetics:

Prosthetic components are made from a variety of materials, including:

• Metals: Aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel are used for strength and durability.

• Plastics: Various plastics are used for sockets, pylons, and other parts.

• Composites: Carbon fiber and fiberglass offer a good strength-to-weight ratio.

• Silicones: Used for liners and other soft components to improve comfort and fit.
